I tried to solve the responsive requirement by going with a modular design, rather than shrinking the images with the resolution. It works pretty well for the content pages. The grid goes from a three column, to a two column, and then a single column layout, with the boxes in the correct reading order. Since my navigation bar was already in a vertical format, I decided to keep it since it seemed to work with the phone/tablet sizes as well.
I simplified the gallery by having all "sub galleries" accessed from the main home gallery page. I used a technique where each group of gallery images links back to a single "launch" image. I thought it would look less cluttered than having dozens of small thumbnails.
I enjoyed devoting an entire site to a single artist - it was a fun creative exercise.
